The Hinckley Spillway is part of the Great Miami River watershed, a nearly seven-hundred-and-fifty square mile area in western Ohio. It flows from a number of rivers that feed into the watershed and its main tributary is the Mad River. The water from this river is then released from dams and arranged in a larger network of channels to allow the water to flow into the larger waters of the Great Miami River. The Hinckley Spillway is one of three spillways that are part of the larger Great Miami River dam system. It was constructed during the late 1800s as part of the Jackson-Forest Reserve program, as part of a large-scale flood control program.
